Shipwreck near Kalamata: nobody dies, but afterwards 3 passengers are criminalized due to boat driving
Thu Dec 23 2021
We receive a call from a boat with 92 people, the people tell us that the boat has "many holes". We send an email to the Hellenic Coast Guard in Piraeus about the situation. In a phonecall right afterwards they don't confirm to launch a search and rescue mission. The people on the boat tell us they are dying. We keep in constant contact with them.
We call the Hellenic Coast Guard again. They confirm to have launched a rescue operation.
We are still in contact with the people on board. An hour later, a relative tells us the people from the boat reached the shore autonomously and all got out of the boat. We never established contact to the people on board afterwards again but the relative told us they were brought to a camp.
Later we learn that 3 among the survivors of the shipwreck were accused of boatdriving and smuggling. Again, people who survived a shipwreck were criminalized by the Greek state after arrival. Several local media reported about the case: https://www.iapopsi.gr/nea-prosaraxi-ploioy-me-92-metanastes-sti-mani-synelifthisan-tria-atoma/ https://www.efsyn.gr/ellada/dikaiomata/311173_skafos-me-prosfyges-akybernito-st-anoihta-toy-tainaroy https://www.rosa.gr/prosfygiko/prosaraxi-skafous-me-92-prosfiges-stin-anatoliki-mani-anamesa-tous-54-paidia/ https://www.skaipatras.gr/2021/12/24/prosfygiko-nea-prosaraxi-ploioy-me-92-metanastes-sti-mani-sta-cheria-ton-archon-treis-diakinites/
